In September, 1914, the 1/7th Middlesex battalion went to Gibraltar, the first Territorial Army unit to go abroad. In February, 1915, they returned home and in March they went to France where they joined 23 Brigade of 8th Division. Their first experience of the trenches came on 19-20th March with a two day instructional period with the 2nd Middlesex battalion near Laventie. On the afternoon of 21st March the battalion moved back to billets in La Gorgue but not before Alfred Turrell had been killed.
